    1. Not for me

Reviewed: 3 September 2014 by Lewsee, a Straight Going Steady Female

Very easy to get into. However it takes a lot of time to get out of.

Very secure, have used this many times and there is no sign of it breaking.

Good high quality material, I enjoy using this set regularly.

For the price it's really a bargain!

I would recommend this product to experienced couples.

I liked the material and how secure it is.
How difficult it is to get out of it when you're finished.
      Bottom line
Great product, great quality, not for novices.

    1. A little too secure

Reviewed: 3 September 2014 by sleepycelia

I was very kindly sent this as a tester from Lovehoney - thanks, guys!

First off - if you buy this set intending to gift it to someone, I'd recommend stocking up on your gift boxes and satin bows now, as the whole shebang comes plainly, in clear plastic bags.

Usually I'm a big fan of plain packaging and chuck out 90% of the elaborate boxes that come with luxury toys, but I think considering the price point there could've at least been a leaflet detailing different ways you can use this, much like the booklets that come with other Lovehoney-branded toys. I'm all for using your imagination, but sometimes being presented with so many opportunities with little guidance, can be a bit daunting, especially if you buy this for convenience's sake, and not because you're a seasoned bondage expert!

The entire set is made up of two sets of thick leather cuffs, a padded collar with three attached D-rings, a chain lead with leather loop, two long metal chains and two carabiner clips.

All the leather bits have that lovely rich leather smell, and the metal chains are pleasantly weighty. The buckles are thick and secure, although sadly not lockable, and the two carabiner clips you get are decent quality. Not as polished as I'd expect, but not flimsy bits of kit, either.

Whenever I get a new restraint I always try them on myself first, partly because I'm impatient, but also just to check out any issues they might have. Usually things are fine, but I think it's a pretty good general rule to have. Unfortunately, things were definitely not all fine, this time round.

I secured myself into the ankle cuffs, left them on for a few hours while I went about my business, and I was very happy with the soft feel and how snug they were. Until I came to take them off. Ah. Oh no. Oh god. They were stuck! The buckle wouldn't give up the strap! Eventually, I got out of them with a lot of rolling around on my back, much like an upturned tortoise, but I was left pretty concerned and mightily unimpressed. What if I'd tried the collar on first?

I got a leather-fiend friend to look them over for me, and we realised that this is a problem with how stiff the leather seems to be. This issue is a bit of an ouroboros - to soften the leather you need to wear them, so they can adapt to your shape and gradually warm up naturally, but who wants to wear something they might have to be cut out of?

I worked around it a little by leaving the cuffs and collar in the sunlight for a few hours and rubbing a leather oil into them, as well as enlarging the holes slightly with a small leather tool (you could use a skewer or similar but something tells me this wouldn't be the best idea). It did help, but considering how pricey this kit is, I don't know. You shouldn't really have to do something like that.

Aside from the 'oh god I'm going to be stuck in these forever, please don't make me call the fire brigade' issue, which I've solved, the Dominix cuffs are some of the most comfortable I've ever tried. They're heavily padded, go all the way down to teeny tiny wrist and ankle sizes and don't slide about when they're on. I have small wrists and ankles and sometimes things either don't fasten properly or move up and down when I'm wearing them, but these are perfect.

The collar's a little chunky and wide for my liking as I prefer thin, sleek looking collars with a single O-ring, but it's durable for sure, and I can't complain about the build quality. I have a minor gripe with the lead, though, as it's much shorter than I expected.

Frankly, there's an overwhelming number of ways to use the Dominix five-piece kit. After all the fuss softening them, I worked up the courage to try it all on at once, which could be good if you're into slave-type bondage, but resulted in the chains becoming really tangled at the top and middle. Plus the whole getup made so much noise, you could've mistaken it for a small army of cats with bell collars. I'm not sure if I recommend doing this. I felt a bit daft, rather than turned on at all, but doubtless there are some people who'd be into it.

I prefer using one or two items at once with this kit; putting the collar on, swivelling it around and connecting the cuffs to it either with a doubled-over chain - they're too long otherwise - or directly with the carabiner clip. It makes for a good position restraint, that keeps your arms up and behind your back. You can connect ankles to wrists, and ankles to collar for keeping someone's legs shut, but still allowing them the use of their hands.

You can also incorporate your own gear into this, using extra double-sided clips and ropes to create hogties and unique position restraints. It's hugely versatile, and a brilliant basic bondage set up. And they don't leave any telltale red marks, either. Not even when you're wrestling with them in a mad bid to get them off before your housemates come home.

In conclusion? I'm conflicted. When I buy leather goods, I do expect to have to break them in a bit - it's part and parcel of the whole thing. It's almost like a ritual. But I don't expect to come very close to being trapped in them - that's ridiculous. For the price point I'd expect better, especially when I've bought £11 leather cuffs that have been soft and comfortable from the beginning (ironically from Lovehoney's lower-priced bondage brand, bondage boutique) with absolutely no risk of getting stuck.

I can imagine this being even more of a concern if you or your partner have weak wrists, carpal tunnel or arthritis. On the other hand, it's a great kit! It's really adaptable, the cuffs are comfortable and heavyweight without feeling like you're dragging them around, the build quality's excellent, and it offers up both an ideal beginners set up or a booster to anyone's toy box, regardless of where you're at.

I just don't know. It could very well be that mine had a one-off flaw, and all the others could be fine, but that's a big risk to take. Sorry, Lovehoney, I'm going to have to be a pest on this one and say verdict: inconclusive.

High-quality build, extremely comfortable, well-made, very versatile.
They wouldn't come off! Collar and leash not to my taste.
      Bottom line
Wonderful, but with a flaw I can't look past.
